MKTG 349 Week 8- Ethics of Generative AI

A painter sits at their easel, crafting a masterpiece on canvas. The artist spent years mastering their craft to create a stunning piece. After six grueling months, the painting is completed using the knowledge, skills, and time of the painter. Artificial intelligence (AI) has streamlined the artistic process and questions ethics.

AI allows anyone to create a masterpiece. In “The 5 Ways AI is Changing Writing”, Todd Kelsey explores generative images. DALL-E 2, Imagen, and Parti are AI-generating art tools. By entering a description, such as a snowman drinking tea or flying cars stuck in traffic, various images can be produced on DALL-E. The AI tools create high-quality images. The system requires no artistic background allowing anyone to create quality images for free.

With the development of generative AI, ethical and legal questions have been proposed. In response to ethical concerns, DALL-E 2 has removed explicit content from their training data that include; hate, violence, or adult images. The system will not generate images when a description includes terms or images that include explicit concepts. Some artists have become concerned regarding the legality of generative AI tools that copy works and styles. Kelsey points out that DALL-E 2 no longer allows individuals to enter descriptions that include a specific artist. Other AI tools, such as Mijourney, still allow individuals to create works in the style of artists and their works. Generative AI still has ethical and legal concerns.

AI streamlines the artistic process with accompanied concerns. Generative AI art tools allow individuals the ability to create refined images from a description. The tools raise ethical concerns regarding explicit image generation. The legality of generative AI art tools is a concern for some artists that fear the tools are stealing their work and style.
