MKTG 347 Week 9- Ways to Improve A LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is a well-known social media platform for professionals and job seekers. A LinkedIn profile should be ever-evolving to reflect yourself. People are continuously growing and developing new skills. LinkedIn profiles are an expression of an individual and showcase their skills.

A LinkedIn profile picture and summary are two of the first aspects prospective employers will see on LinkedIn. In “10 LinkedIn Tips For Students & New Grads”, Omar Garriott discusses the importance of a profile photo. LinkedIn accounts with profile photos get fourteen times more views. A LinkedIn profile photo should include a smiling, professionally dressed individual ready to work. The profile photo for a Facebook or Instagram account with a pet cat would not work for LinkedIn. The about section tells a personalized story. In the about section, write in the first person and discuss aspirations and accomplishments. Including keywords in the about section can also help recruiters find the profile. A well-crafted profile picture and summary allow a LinkedIn profile to stand out.

Showcase key skills and certifications on LinkedIn. According to Jane Deehan’s article "20 Steps to A Better LinkedIn Profile In 2022”, adding skills is one of the quickest ways to gain bonus points. As people grow and gain new skills, their skills section on LinkedIn should include relevant skills. Skills can be applied to other areas of a LinkedIn profile. For example, an Adobe Creative Suite skill can be added to a Typography class or a college. Adding certifications to a LinkedIn profile proves an individual has a passion for learning new skills. Updating a LinkedIn profile with new skills and certifications creates a stronger profile.

Adding an appropriate profile picture, summary, skills, and certifications to LinkedIn can improve a profile. A profile picture gives a face to a name. A summary describes what drives a person. Keywords identify important skills. Certifications show a desire to continually grow. Updating a LinkedIn profile provides a current look into an individual.
